I think he always was. At least he liked bitcoin when he taught it at MIT.

I think the plan is to prevent competitors, which if it can get better than BTC its worrisome to them I’d assume, they dont understand layer 2 well enough to see how it doesnt need to evolve.
By distilling crypto they’re pushing a huge amount of innovation into a laser focus on BTC.
